Unless you’re a company executive who has the privilege of flying first class, we’re willing to bet that you hate traveling on airplanes. And your dissatisfaction is justified: in the past year, the cost of airline travel has gone up 50%, with rates expected to jump another 12% to 30% in 2009. Rising oil prices translate into higher rates and lower service expectations (i.e. no peanuts, soda, or pillows).

So what can you do to improve the conditions of your flight? Here are some easy tips for making peace with your neighbors and ensuring your comfort.

•	Dress in layers. You have no idea what the temperature will be on the plane, so bring everything from a tank top to a sweatshirt with you.
•	Bring disinfectant wipes and hand gels, especially if you’re prone to sickness.
•	Keep all of your items under your seat. That will keep them from being kicked around and damaged by other passengers.
•	Practice good airline etiquette. Corral your children as best you can, and also be tolerant of other parents’ little ones.
•	If you’re not interested in chatting with your neighbor, quickly pull out a book or magazine. If he or she insists on being a chatterbox, just whip out your headphones.
•	Keep your seat upright in order to give the passenger behind you enough room to breathe.
•	Try not to bring any smelly foods on the plane with you. We know that it can be difficult to fit in dinner while you’re rushing to make a connection, but peanuts are just as easy to grab as feta cheese.

Travellers headed to Broome, Australia have one destination in mind: Cable Beach. This 22.5 km-long whitewashed paradise features crystal clear turquoise waters and softly rolling waves emerging from the luxurious Indian Ocean. Located 7 km outside of town, the beach features daily camel rides and tracks for 4-wheelers to arrive off of the car park.

One of Cable Beach’s more exciting events includes a nudist area, which also happens to be one of the most famous nudist beaches in the country. That means if you’re just going to the beach for a day of good old-fashioned family fun, you may want to avoid the area just north of the beach access road, as well as the 17 km stretch of land leading up to Willie Creek.

Visitors will want to watch out for the massive 9-meter tide, as well as the presence of sneaky stingers in the water. But in general, Cable Beach is an extremely relaxing area that is great for engaging in various swimming activities and water sports. Other popular beachside activities include barbeques, fishing, and exercise, which each take place at the various picnic areas and restaurants around Broome, Australia.

There are a number of different accommodations to choose from at Cable Beach, which includes several private hotels and villas. Other noteworthy attractions in Broome, Australia include several natural wonders, a lively shopping district, Chinatown, pearling bays, cobblestone markets, and museums. For more information on Broomeor Cable Beach, check out the Broome Visitor Centre website at http://www.broomevisitorcentre.com.au/.

Singapore is a land of many natural beauties and treasures, but the truth is that it is most well-known for its amazing nightlife. Anyone thinking about crafting a Singapore travel plan should definitely try to plan their trip around the annual New Year festivities. In particular, the area of Sentosa is known for its wild Siloso Beach foam parties, which feature Olympic-sized pools filled to the brim with foam.

Gigantic dance floors set the stage for one of the biggest New Year’s Eve parties on the planet. The party is often hosted by MTV Asia, and stocked with all of the hottest DJs and artists. Lasers and special effects light up the dance floor while dancers groove to a mixture of techno, trance, pop, rock, and oldies hits. Firework displays are set off at midnight, and then again at 2:00 AM, to keep the party going.

Because of its spectacularly popular beach parties, Sentosa has repeatedly won Singapore travel awards for its amazing ability to attract tourists. Each year, more than 5.2 million visitors travel to Singapore to witness the wonders that Sentosa has to offer, including a number of exciting sports tournaments, concerts, and dance festivals.

We’ve all heard the nightmare stories of people whose trips were ruined by unexpected circumstances, but there are certain stories that take the cake. One is the tale of a man who travelled to Cambodia, only to find that the local “delicacy” was iced and fried tarantulas! Some of the Cambodian tarantulas are so large that they are served on 12-inch pizza pans, and the legs are eaten like crab legs. Be sure to be familiar with a country’s national foods before planning to stay there for an extended period of time!

Other travel stories involve problems needing immediate attention, such as lost keys, stolen money, or misplaced credit cards. Some travellers find themselves hijacked by criminals posing as taxi drivers at local airports. They are taken to cities that they never intended to go to, and then asked to hand huge fees over to the drivers. In these types of situations, it can help to know the language of the country you will be visiting, so that you can communicate better with local staff.

One way to avoid these travel disasters is by purchasing travel insurance before departing on your trip. This can protect you in the event of theft, sickness, or medical emergency, and will also reimburse you if your trip needs to be cancelled unexpectedly. You should also be aware of the location of your possessions at all times, and be prepared to protect them from theft if necessary. By taking these simple precautions, you won’t have to worry about your trip being ruined because of a silly problem or mistake.

The town of Daylesford in Victoria is known for its clear mineral water, lush restaurants and spas, and gay-friendly atmosphere. Daylesford hosts the country’s largest rural gay pride festival, ChillOut, which has traditionally been seen as a representation of the town’s acceptance of the homosexual movement. The first festival took place in 1997, and has continued to grow in popularity ever since.

However, ChillOut has also been known to draw controversy in the past. The local city council refuses to fly a rainbow gay pride flag outside Town Hall during the week of the festival, which has brought forth a ban on all festival flags around that key public building. This has put into question Daylesford’s reputation as a gay-friendly resort destination.

Regardless of the controversy, one thing’s for sure: ChillOut participants don’t really care what the local council thinks. This year’s festival drew a crowd of more than 25,000 people to the small tourist town, and was backed by the support of over 75 major businesses. The festival theme, Queer as Country Folk, reinforced the ties between Australian homosexuals and their national identity, and included a number of country-themed events on its program listing.

The 2009 ChillOut Festival is scheduled for March 6th through 9th, and promises to draw a bigger crowd than ever to the small town of Daylesford in Victoria. Hepburn Shire can expect to benefit economically from the festival in the amount of upwards of $7 million dollars, and over $45,000 will be donated to local charities and missions.

I spent about a year living and working in Melbourne and loved it – it really is a worthwhile place to visit and a great place to live. Melbourne restaurants and shopping opportunities are world class and the constant vibe of art and culture as you wander the city is a treat.

One particular experience however that stands out as a highlight is Melbourne’s love of sport and the MCG experience. Sitting in the stands of this “colloseum-esque” stadium, listening to the roar of the crowd and watching elite sports people in action, is an unforgettable experience. Even if you aren’t an Australian Rules Football fan or cricket fan (a one-day game at the “G” is a must-see) a visit to the Melbourne cricket ground is a must.

There are a bunch of Melbourne hotels located within easy walking distance of the MCG.
