Making Your Next Flight More Enjoyable

Unless you’re a company executive who has the privilege of flying first class, we’re willing to bet that you hate traveling on airplanes. And your dissatisfaction is justified: in the past year, the cost of airline travel has gone up 50%, with rates expected to jump another 12% to 30% in 2009. Rising oil prices translate into higher rates and lower service expectations (i.e. no peanuts, soda, or pillows).
So what can you do to improve the conditions of your flight? Here are some easy tips for making peace with your neighbors and ensuring your comfort.
• Dress in layers. You have no idea what the temperature will be on the plane, so bring everything from a tank top to a sweatshirt with you.
• Bring disinfectant wipes and hand gels, especially if you’re prone to sickness.
• Keep all of your items under your seat. That will keep them from being kicked around and damaged by other passengers.
• Practice good airline etiquette. Corral your children as best you can, and also be tolerant of other parents’ little ones.
• If you’re not interested in chatting with your neighbor, quickly pull out a book or magazine. If he or she insists on being a chatterbox, just whip out your headphones.
• Keep your seat upright in order to give the passenger behind you enough room to breathe.
• Try not to bring any smelly foods on the plane with you. We know that it can be difficult to fit in dinner while you’re rushing to make a connection, but peanuts are just as easy to grab as feta cheese.
